Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so that search engines and voice assistants can lift it as a direct answer — in featured snippets, "People also ask" boxes, knowledge panels and spoken replies — instead of only listing your page as a link.
AEO builds on SEO. A page still has to be crawlable, indexed and trusted; AEO makes sure the answer inside it is clear, concise and easy for a machine to extract.
Answer engines look for passages that respond to a question directly. When a page states the answer in the first one or two sentences under a heading that mirrors the question, supports it with detail, and uses formats that suit the query — a short paragraph for "what is", numbered steps for "how to", a table for comparisons — it becomes easier to quote.
Structured data such as FAQPage, HowTo (where still supported), Article and Organization schema adds explicit meaning. Clear entity information — who you are, what you offer, where you operate — helps systems connect your content with the questions people ask. Google states that structured data does not guarantee a rich result, so we treat it as one supporting signal, not a shortcut.
A growing share of searches are answered on the results page itself. When that happens, the brand whose content is quoted gains visibility and credibility even if the searcher never clicks. If your content is not structured as a clear answer, a competitor or a generic directory is quoted instead — even when you rank on page one.
The same discipline also improves your pages for people: answer-first writing is faster to read, easier to scan on mobile, and better at converting visitors who arrive with a specific question.
