Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the practice of improving a website so that search engines such as Google and Bing can crawl it, understand it and rank it for the searches your customers make. It combines technical health, content that matches search intent, and authority earned from other websites.
Unlike paid ads, SEO does not charge per click. The work compounds: a page that earns a stable ranking can keep bringing in qualified visitors for months or years, as long as it stays accurate, useful and technically sound.
Search engines work in three stages. First they crawl the web, following links and sitemaps to discover pages. Then they index those pages — rendering them, reading the text, structured data and links, and deciding whether they are worth storing. Finally, when someone searches, ranking systems pick the most relevant and helpful indexed pages for that query, weighing hundreds of signals such as relevance, quality, page experience and the authority of the site.
SEO influences each stage. Technical SEO makes sure important pages can be crawled and indexed without errors. On-page SEO aligns each page with a clear search intent, using descriptive titles, headings, internal links and content that answers the question fully. Off-page SEO builds the reputation signals — links, mentions and reviews — that tell search engines other people trust you.
Most buying journeys in India now start with a search, whether that is a founder comparing CRM tools, a parent researching coaching institutes or a homebuyer looking up a locality. If your site does not appear for those searches, the demand goes to a competitor or a marketplace.
SEO is also the foundation for newer forms of search. Featured snippets, Google AI Overviews and AI assistants all draw on pages that search engines can already crawl, understand and trust. A technically weak, thin website struggles on every one of these surfaces.
