Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of improving how AI assistants and AI search features — such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Google AI Overviews — understand, mention and cite your brand when they generate answers.
GEO focuses on authority, consistent brand information and citation-worthy content across the web, rather than on a single ranking position.
Generative AI systems produce answers in two broad ways. Some rely on what the model learned during training from large amounts of public text. Others retrieve live web pages at the moment of the question and summarise them, often with citations. In both cases, the brands that appear tend to be those described clearly and consistently across many trustworthy sources.
GEO therefore works on several layers: making sure AI crawlers can access your important pages, stating who you are and what you do in plain language, publishing original information worth citing (definitions, data, frameworks, expert commentary), and earning mentions on the publications, directories, review sites and communities those systems draw on.
Buyers increasingly ask AI assistants for shortlists — "best SEO tools for a small team", "top coaching institutes for CA in Pune", "which CRM integrates with Tally". The answer often names a handful of brands. If yours is missing, you may never know you were considered.
No one controls these systems, and answers vary by model, prompt and date. That is why GEO is about strengthening the signals they are known to rely on and measuring trends over time, not chasing a single answer.
